Evergreen by David Batchelor was commissioned in 2003 by More London, with support from Pool of London Partnership and Arts & Business New Partners. It is one of a number of sculptures gracing the modern office block complex located adjacent to the Tower of London. Other works include “Full Stop Slipstream” by Fiona Banner, featured here on 8th August.
The sculpture is located in a group of trees squeezed between two glass clad office blocks. In the summer it remains unnoticed by passers-by, hidden by the rich foliage of the trees. It is at its best in October, when the trees leaves turn golden brown, to red to yellow. There is almost a competition between the trees shouting “look at us, look at our natural beauty, stop and wonder at natures glory”; while the sculpture says” but look at me my glowing neon green, I reign supreme impervious to the influences of nature, come next week or next month and I’ll be still here, as beautiful then as I am today”.
