As the subject of the last two memorial day blogs have been located in Parliament Square it would be appropriate to described probably the most famous figure immortalised in the square, that is of Winston Churchill.
The statue of Churchill is located in the north east corner, facing Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, with his back to David Lloyd George- very appropriate as in life, in 1923 he turned his back on Lloyd George and the Liberal Party, to rejoin the Conservative Party in 1924. The rest is history.
The statue, by the Welsh sculptor, came in for a great deal of criticism when it was unveiled by Lady Churchill on 1st November 1973. In April of that year, just before the statue was cast in bronze, it was modified by the sculptor following harsh criticism by Government Officials, who said the clay model bore a little too much resemblance to Benito Mussolini. The sculptor Ivor Roberts-Jones removed the dome of the head resulting in lowering of the forehead.
