Memorial day - 27

One day I'll have to count the number of memorials and statutes located in Whitehall, the centre of British Government and the road connecting Trafalgar Square with Parliament Square.

The most famous located just south of the entrance into Downing Street is the Cenotaph designed and built by Edwin Lutyens at the request of the then Prime Minister Lloyd George, (the subject of Memorial day 25 - blog).

But the subject of today's blog is the monument located in the centre of the road just north of Downing Street, unveiled by the Queen on 9th July 2005 it is to the memory of the Women of World War 2.
The 22ft-high bronze sculpture depicts the uniforms and working clothes worn by women during the war.

The sculpture which cost £1million is the work of John Mill. The memorial deliberately does not depict any individual women and is a tribute to all seven million who contributed to the war effort.
