Memorial day - 44

The highly successful First Emperors Exhibition in the British Museum has just finished.

China’s First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi was buried in Xi'an with the now world-famous terracotta warriors.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there was a piece of Chine's modern art on view in the Grand Court - interestingly the Court with its high tech roof, is the largest covered public square in Europe.

The sculpture entitled Rock Number 59 is the work of Zhan Wang.

For centuries rocks have been an aesthetic element in Chinese life. Craggy rocks representing mountains have been placed in gardens.

Zhan moulds stainless steel sheets over actual rocks, which he welds together to form highly polished hollow sculptures.

I guess Rock 59 is ten foot tall.
